Merseburg-based Exipnos GmbH is presenting a novel material at the EinheitsEXPO that combines the best properties of plastic, porcelain, and natural materials such as wood and bamboo. This showcase of the 16 German federal states is taking place in Halle (Saale) until October 3rd to commemorate the 31st anniversary of German reunification. The bio-based, melamine-free, and robust BioCelain® has been tailored to the needs of campers and young parents.

Merseburg, September 17, 2021. Among the exhibits that Saxony-Anhalt is presenting in its glass display container at the Unity Expo are cups made of BioCelain®, a new material for outdoor and camping tableware, reusable food packaging, catering equipment, children’s tableware, toys, exclusive design objects, and much more. Developed and produced by Exipnos GmbH, a medium-sized family business from Merseburg, the material combines the advantages of previously seemingly incompatible material worlds.

BioCelain® is produced on a plant-based basis with minimal energy expenditure and is

  • Unbreakable like plastic, but with a pleasantly high-quality feel in the hand, similar to porcelain .
  • Dishwasher safe like porcelain, but like wood , it decomposes into compost within months in a biologically active, moist environment, similar to untreated wood or bamboo.
  • BioCelain® has been tested for food safety by an independent laboratory. According to the results , it meets the requirements of European Food Regulation 10/2011 regarding global migration (07.02A00411). The limit for infants and young children is met. The limits for heavy metals, elements, aromatic amines (PAAs), and VOCs are also met. Melamine or its derivatives were not detected.
  • Microwaveable like porcelain, but pleasantly heat-insulating like plastic,
  • colored with natural, non-toxic mineral dyes .
  • Recyclable : At the end of its product life, BioCelain® tableware can be granulated and added to the manufacturing process for new, equivalent BioCelain® products.

Exipnos produces and processes BioCelain® using the DCIM direct compounding process, which was also developed in-house and brought to series production readiness in collaboration with Yizumi Germany. This process consumes approximately 500 Wh less energy per kilogram of material (up to 50 percent less) than conventional injection molding.

Mug sets in black-red-gold (yellow) can be purchased   exclusively in the company’s own online shop (www.exipnos.de/shop) on the occasion of the Day of German Unity.
