Merseburg-based Exipnos GmbH presented its plant-based, biodegradable material BIO-ELAN QP 55 for durable components to the public for the first time at Fakuma. The compound is in no way inferior to conventional plastics used for writing instruments, cladding, or furniture in terms of its performance characteristics and can be transformed into compost by microbes at the end of its product life.

Merseburg, October 16, 2018. Biodegradable plastics have so far mostly been used in short-lived applications such as food packaging or coffee capsules. Merseburg-based Exipnos GmbH is presenting “BIO-ELAN QP 55” at Fakuma, the leading trade fair for plastics processing in Friedrichshafen, a plant-based, biodegradable plastic specifically developed for durable components such as writing instruments, coverings, furniture, or toys.

The compound is characterized by good processing properties as well as high impact strength and stiffness. BIO-ELAN QP 55 is suitable for injection molding as well as extrusion or additive manufacturing (3D printing). In terms of performance, the compound is in no way inferior to conventional plastics and can be composted by microorganisms and enzymes at the end of its product life.
